During a weekend away in London with my twin sister, who is currently studying Musical Theatre Performance at the University of Chichester, we went to see The Wedding Singer the musical at the Wembley Park Troubadour Theatre, in Wembley, during its limited run. The cast included Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Kevin Clifton - who was playing the lead, the wedding singer, Robbie Hart. Lucy and I hadn't seen the film that the musical is based on starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore or any other versions of the musical, so neither of us knew what to expect and we both thought that the show was fantastic! It was very well cast with lots of showstopping songs and choreography and some fun set and costumes - designed by Francis O'Connor.
I thought that the set was very fascinating. One important piece of set was wooden fencing which was split into four parts and could slide out from stage right, sometimes fully and sometimes with only a couple of the parts of the fencing showing so it looked like you could see outside the wedding venue that band perform at and the inside of the venue as well. Another piece of set that I really liked was the LED light borders around the wings. In one scene Robbie, his bandmates and some of the male ensemble are in a bar and the bar is the top border which was lowered down a before the scene which I thought was very clever.
Overall, I really enjoyed this production (as did my sister). The costumes very much reflected the 80s and the set was used very well and transitions were smooth and quick.
