For the third project of 2nd year Theatre Design, we were required to design an outdoor piece for Nottingham's 2021 Light Night, relating to this year's theme 'Rebel City'. I chose to look at Nottingham Castle and the 1831 riots.
During this project, I used different sources to help get an understanding of Nottingham Castle's history and the 1831 riots. I especially found creating mood boards of images that I found online, which inspired elements of my design or narrative for the piece, very helpful for me during the research process. I was also fortunate to speak with former NTU Theatre Design Alumni Adrian Davies, who has done lots of research on Nottingham Castle, for the gallery there and on the 1831 reform riots, for a exhibition called '1831 Riots at Nottingham Castle'. He gave me some insightful information and fascinating resources for my research which proved very useful.
During this project, we had lessons in Photoshop looking at creating different costumes using pictures and neon shapes. We used different tools, such as warp and pattern on skin. For some of my Photoshop costumes I used a section of a drawing about the 1831 riots, showing the 1831 reform bill on fire. I also used a section of a Nottingham Castle wall for the pattern on skin costumes.
I created initial sketches for ideas, some of which I incorporated into my final designs through using photoshop. Most of the sketches were very rough and a lot of them were simply pencil and fine liner drawings. However, I did also incorporate watercolour paints, felt tip pens and highlighters (for UV colours) into my sketches. I used AutoCAD, to work out dimensions of the sections of the wall
