Hamlet at Shakespeare's Globe Review

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

During this period of lockdown and isolation due to Covid-19, theatres and producers, such as The National Theatre, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Shakespeare's Globe have been streaming filmed productions of some of their live theatre shows on their YouTube channels. I think that this is a fantastic idea because it allows people to continue enjoying theatre productions and the arts whilst all the theatres and arts centres are closed and I have enjoyed watching a few productions on YouTube over the past few weeks.

During the Easter holiday's, in preparation for my summer term project, which is to create a concept and design set and costumes for a speculative production of Hamlet, I watched The Globe's 2018 production of Hamlet, with actress and, at that time, the new artistic director of The Globe, Michelle Terry playing the titular role. In my opinion, this production was very innovative and accessible - for example the cast used BSL during the play especially deaf actress Nadia Nadarajah, who played Guildenstern, who did her dialogue all in BSL.

Their was a combination of modern clothing and Elizabethan style costumes, which I felt helped to bring out each character's personality. For example, when the audience is first introduced to Terry's Hamlet, the character is seen wearing black jeans and a black zip-up hoodie, looking like a rebellious goth teenager. In contrast, all around Hamlet the other characters are all dressed in costumes that are reminiscent of the Tudor period..
